Steinbach Regional scored 14 points in the final five minutes and rallied for a 21-16 victory over the West Kildonan Wolverines at A.D. Penner Park. Owen Medeiros ran 27 yards for a touchdown to cut the Wolverines lead to 16-14. On West Kildonan's very next possession, Logan Toews recovered his own blocked punt in the end zone for the Sabres first special teams touchdown of the season. West Kildonan had a chance to win it late. With less than a minute remaining, the SRSS defense had a huge goal-line stand stuffing the Wolverines three rushing attempts from the one-yard line. Steinbach Regional quarterback Arkin Padron completed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Alex Horn in the first quarter. The Sabres improved to 4-0 in the Winnipeg High School Football League's JV9 Division and will face the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes next Tuesday in Steinbach. 


The Provincial High School Cross Country Championships take place today in Clearwater hosted by Prairie Mountain High School. 1,100 runners are expected to compete in the junior varsity and varsity divisions. Zone 13 athletes attending the provincials include runners from Gabrielle Roy, Edward Schreyer of Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet, Niverville, Pointe des Chenes, Ecole St Joachim in La Broquerie and Whitemouth. 


The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three unanswered second period goals and fell 4-1 to the Everett Silvertips at Westoba Place. Ben Binder Nord had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings who were outshot 44-31 by Everett. Brandon (4-2-0-1) will play a pair of games in Alberta this weekend. The Wheat Kings will face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday. 


The Winnipeg Jets play their NHL season opener tonight against the Oilers in Edmonton, The Jets home opener is Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre. Ville Heinola (ankle) and Logan Stanley (knee) will begin the season on injured reserve.


Four-time Canadian men's curling champion and two-time World champion Kevin Koe has added Aaron Sluchinski to his team at second. Koe dropped Jacques Gauthier from the squad last month. Sluchinski beat Koe in the Alberta final last winter. Tyler Tardi and Karrick Martin round out the team.


Milos Raonic will play for Canada at the Davis Cup Final Eight next month in Spain. He's replacing Felix Auger-Aliassime, who's planning to focus on his humanitarian work in Togo. Canada will play Germany in the quarterfinals on November 20th.

The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 4-1 decision to the Everett Silvertips Tuesday night at Westoba Place. Wheat Kings head coach Marty Murray will join Clayton Dreger on Sportsbeat which airs Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
