The Provincial High School Cross Country Championships take place today in Clearwater hosted by Prairie Mountain High School. 1,100 runners are expected to compete in the junior varsity and varsity divisions. Zone 9 athletes attending the provincials include runners from Boissevain School and Killarney Collegiate.
The Virden Oil Capitals dropped a 5-2 decision to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard Tuesday night in The Pas. Noel Englot and Tyler Dodgson did the goal scoring for the Caps who gave up two power play goals and two shorthanded goals to the Blizzard. Dodgson's second of the season 5:21 into the second period tied the game at 2-2. Virden will meet the Swan Valley Stampeders tonight in Swan River and then host the Winnipeg Blues on Friday.
The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three unanswered second period goals and fell 4-1 to the Everett Silvertips at Westoba Place. Ben Binder Nord had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings who were outshot 44-31 by Everett. Brandon (4-2-0-1) will play a pair of games in Alberta this weekend. The Wheat Kings will face the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday and the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday.
The Winnipeg Jets play their NHL season opener tonight against the Oilers in Edmonton, The Jets home opener is Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre. Ville Heinola (ankle) and Logan Stanley (knee) will begin the season on injured reserve.
Four-time Canadian men's curling champion and two-time World champion Kevin Koe has added Aaron Sluchinski to his team at second. Koe dropped Jacques Gauthier from the squad last month. Sluchinski beat Koe in the Alberta final last winter. Tyler Tardi and Karrick Martin round out the team.
Milos Raonic will play for Canada at the Davis Cup Final Eight next month in Spain. He's replacing Felix Auger-Aliassime, who's planning to focus on his humanitarian work in Togo. Canada will play Germany in the quarterfinals on November 20th.
