The Miller Aces are Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Cross Country champions. Kate Sawatzky, India Loewen, Kirsten Giesbrecht, Kennedy Loewen, Sienna Loewen, Halle Smith and Bella Peters captured the varsity girls championship banner Wednesday in Clearwater. Jessica Kagan, Kate Giesbrecht, Brielle Apperely, Anika Wiens, Alison Convrey and Leah Marek of the Morden Thunder finished third. Nel Vanderveen, Hayden Manness, Eastyn Beach, Shea Friesen, Sadie Spicer, Naomi Price-Wiebe and Melia Hrushowy of the Sanford Sabres finished third in JV girls. Cruz Rutledge, Drew Apperely, Paul Wiens, David Giesbrecht, Don Ammuyutan, Wyatt Croft and Liam Ona were third in JV boys. Alina Wiens of MCI won bronze in the overall individual junior varsity girls competition. Nate Phillips of the Carman Cougars was third in the varsity boys.
The Morris Mavericks scored three unanswered third period goals and rallied for a 4-3 victory over the defending Zone 4 High School Hockey League champion Morden Thunder. Owen Maynard scored the tying goal with 7:06 left in regulation and Nate Hamilton potted the go-ahead goal 59 seconds later. Both were scored on the power play. Ceanan Holdnick and Justin Lavack also scored for the hometown Mavericks. Gavin Funk, Vance Olson and Alex Wieler replied for the Thunder.
Mason Appleton had a goal and two assists and Connor Hellebuyck recorded his 38th career shutout as the Winnipeg Jets won their season opener 6-0 over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. Hellebucyk stopped all 30 shots he faced. Adam Lowry, Mark Scheifele, Rasmus Kupari, Dylan Samberg and Kyle Connor also scored for the Jets. Connor scored in Winnipeg's season opener for an NHL record seventh consecutive year. The Jets pulled away early in the second period when Kupari and Samberg scored in a 20-second span less than five minutes into the middle frame extending Winnipeg's lead to 4-0. The Jets play their home opener Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added American linebacker Bryce Notree and Amercian offensive lineman Chris Walker to the practice roster and released American quarterback Darren Grainger and American defensive lineman Brandon Wright. The Bombers (10-6) play their final regular season home game Friday night against the Toronto Argonauts. Winnipeg will clinch first place and earn a bye to the West Division final with a win over the Argos.
