Gabrielle Roy varsity boys & junior varsity boys and Niverville junior varsity girls brought home silver medals from the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Cross Country championships Wednesday in Clearwater. Kaden Gowryluk, Riley Chammartin, Andrew Chammartin, Zackarie Hildebrand, Brody Michaud, Tyson Laroche and Zacharie Normandeau of Les Roys were second in varsity boys. Gabrielle Roy’s Eric Verrier, Malyk Jeanson, Noah Cantin, Liam Girardin, Jamie Barnabe, Brody Moutray and Max Stewart were second in JV boys. Piper Pohrebniuk, Willa Dowse, Natalie Froese, Moxie St. Cyr, Bella Raftis, Gabi Meijer and Arie McDonald of the Niverville Panthers were JV girls second place finishers. Adrian Desmarais, Jonah Abrams, Oakley Friesen, Emmitt Barkman, Brandon Woolward and Spencer Peters of Steinbach Christian were fourth in the JV boys. Kaitlyn Wiens of Powerview won silver in the overall individual junior varsity girls competition.


Steinbach Regional will meet the Garden City Gophers today at A.D. Penner Park. The opening kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.  The Sabres have won three in a row after starting the season with back-to-back losses. The SRSS is tied with the Grant Park Pirates and Vincent Massey Trojans for second place in the Winnipeg High School Football League's AAAA South East Division. The first place Dakota Lancers are 5-0. 


Adam Vigfusson had two goals and two assists in the Niverville Nighthawks 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Blues at Hockey for all Centre. Alex Ballard and Aiden Corbett also scored for the Nighthawks who led 3-0 and 4-1 at the period breaks. Niverville netminder Austin Dubinsky made 25 saves. The Nighthawks (5-2) next games is Friday at home against the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's West Division leading Northern Manitoba Blizzard.


Mason Appleton had a goal and two assists and Connor Hellebuyck recorded his 38th career shutout as the Winnipeg Jets won their season opener 6-0 over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. Hellebucyk stopped all 30 shots he faced. Adam Lowry, Mark Scheifele, Rasmus Kupari, Dylan Samberg and Kyle Connor also scored for the Jets. Connor scored in Winnipeg's season opener for an NHL record seventh consecutive year. The Jets pulled away early in the second period when Kupari and Samberg scored in a 20-second span less than five minutes into the middle frame extending Winnipeg's lead to 4-0. The Jets play their home opener Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added American linebacker Bryce Notree and Amercian offensive lineman Chris Walker to the practice roster and released American quarterback Darren Grainger and American defensive lineman Brandon Wright. The Bombers (10-6) play their final regular season home game Friday night against the Toronto Argonauts. Winnipeg will clinch first place and earn a bye to the West Division final with a win over the Argos.

The Pistons have won five of their first six games

Steinbach recorded wins over the Northern Manitoba Blizzard and Swan Valley Stampeders last weekend. Head coach Paul Dyck will join Clayton Dreger on the Pistons Report which airs Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
