The Co-op Challenge kicked off in Estevan Wednesday night. The Challenge is a series of games played between the senior volleyball teams at Weyburn Comprehensive School, and Estevan Comprehensive School.
The series started with the Senior Girls' teams taking to the court. While the WCS Eagles kept things close in the first set, Estevan started to pull away in the second and ultimately took all three sets (23-25, 14-25, 20-25).
“I think in our first set, we showed resilience,” said Eagles senior girls’ head coach Andrea Kerr. “We came back with a little bit of a deficit, and we made the match a little bit close with a 23-25 loss. But I think for our girls to know that they can come back in that type of situation is a positive in our corner, and I think we need to continue to use that moving ahead, and moving into our next sets as well.”
The senior boys then took to the floor, with WCS hoping to split the game to keep things even heading into the second leg of the series later this month. Estevan, however, had other plans and would sweep the game in three sets (18-25. 19-25, 15-25).
Despite the loss, James Dempsey, head coach of the Eagles, was optimistic.
“It was a lot of fun, great atmosphere,” he said after the game. “It’s awesome that both communities come together for something like this. It was awesome to see our guys rise to the occasion. I thought it was well fought by both sides, some really talented players from Estevan, and some really talented players from Weyburn as well. It was a great experience for a lot of our guys.”
While the Eagles may be down two games to none in the challenge, they still have the chance to rally back from behind, dig deep, and pick up the overall victory when they host the second leg of the challenge. Those games will be played on October 23rd in the Eagles Gym at Weyburn Comprehensive, with the senior boys taking to the floor at 5:30 p.m., and the senior girls at 7:30 p.m.
