The Portage la Prairie Salvation Army is thankful for you this weekend.

Major Brenda Hammond says they fed a number of families for Thanksgiving weekend.

"This Wednesday, we served 68 families. We want to thank Portage and the area, as well as the farmers because we were able to give these robust hampers to everyone. They received just a bounty of vegetables: cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, potatoes, and watermelon. We were able to give everybody a chicken and a ham for Thanksgiving supper and bacon for their Thanksgiving breakfast."

Hammond shouted out Stride Credit Union and BDO for making large vegetable donations just in time for such an important weekend.

"Stride Credit Union came through with a very timely donation, and so did BDO. It's certainly fantastic for our folks that are receiving the veggies."

She says there is a shift in programming regarding Thanksgiving, and feeding as many families as they did wouldn't have been possible without the community.

"I think it's marvellous to be reminded to be thankful, and every year, we're given that opportunity to be thankful."

Looking ahead, Hammond hopes everyone can start donating knitted items for the children of Portage la Prairie so they can stay warm during the winter.
