The Zone 13 champions played in the third place games at the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Soccer championships Saturday in Minnedosa. Niverville girls lost 2-1 to the Morden Thunder and Niverville boys fell 1-0 to the host Minnedosa Chancellors. Hannah DeGueldre, Liam Montgomery and Haven Wiebe of the Panthers were named tournament All-Stars. The Miller Aces defeated the Garden Valley Zodiacs 3-1 in the girls final while Morden shaded GVC 2-1 in the boys final.
The Steinbach Pistons win streak has reached six games. The Pistons scored four unanswered second period goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Niverville Nighthawks Saturday night at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Jackson Kostiuk, Ryan McDonald, Mathis Laplante, Brody Green and captain Noah Szabo did the goal scoring for Steinbach. Dawson Zeller had the lone goal for the Nighthawks.
The Steinbach Huskies, Springfield Xtreme and Niverville Clippers were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Saturday night. William McDonald made 33 saves as the defending champion Huskies defeated Mitchell 3-1. Cody Neufeld, Kailen Penner and Troy Friesen did the goal scoring for Steinbach. Jay Friesen replied for the Mustangs. Ben Chambers had two goals and an assist as the Xtreme downed the Landmark Blues 10-2 and Teo Lambert had a hat trick in the Clippers 10-1 victory over the Ste. Anne Aces.
The Beausejour Comets have moved into first place in the Capital Region Junior Hocke League. Braeden Bowes scored twice and Alex Cavanagh made 30 saves as the Comets downed the Arborg Ice Dawgs 5-2 and improved to 4-1.
The Eastman Selects are 4-0 to start the 2024-25 Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League season. Chloe Carriere scored twice as Eastman shaded the Yellowhead Chiefs 4-3. Abby Dixon and Delainey Rigaux also scored for the Selects who received a 25-save performance from Isabelle Labossiere.
Calyb Moore had a hat trick as Eastman defeated the Kenora Thistles 6-3 at the SunGro Centre in Beausejour. Grayson Slaney, Daniel De Gagne and Josh Borgfjord also scored for the Selects.
The Brandon Wheat Kings wrapped up their two-game Alberta road trip with a 5-3 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Nolan Flamand scored twice and drew an assist on Marcus Nguyen’s second period power play goal.
The Manitoba Moose opened the 2024-25 American Hockey League season with a 6-4 victory over the Iowa Wild. Nikita Chibrikov had a goal and two assists for the Moose.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers quest to clinch top spot in the West Division will come down to the final week of the CFL’s regular season schedule. The Saskatchewan Roughriders bounced the BC Lions 39-8 Saturday night in Regina and moved within one point of first place Winnipeg. The Blue Bombers (10-7) and Riders (9-7-1) both have the Week 20 bye and will play their regular season finales Saturday, October 26th. Winnipeg will face the Alouettes in Montreal while Saskatchewan will host the Calgary Stampeders. A Blue Bombers win, or a Roughriders loss will give Winnipeg first place and bye to the West Division final.
