Lucas Newman scored three times and Hunter Gregory made 15 saves in recording the shutout as the defending Westman High School Hockey League champion Vincent Massey Vikings blanked Crocus Plains 7-0.
Connor Hoemsen had two goals and an assist to lead the Southwest Cougars past the Winnipeg Thrashers 5-3. Bryan Laing, Shane Elder and Spencer Cullen also scored for the Cougars who have won four of their last five games.
Ivy Perkin scored the tying goal shorthanded 65 seconds into the third period and then potted the go-ahead goal with 9:26 left as the Westman Wildcats shaded the Eastman Selects 3-2. Charlie Shearer also scored for the Wildcats. Kylie Hack made 24 saves in net for Westman.
The Winnipeg Jets have won three straight games to open the 2024-25 NHL season. Kyle Connor scored a power play goal 51 seconds into overtime to lift the Jets past the Minnesota Wild 2-1. Mark Scheifele also scored for Winnipeg. His fourth goal of the season with two seconds left in the first period directly off a face-off win and Connor Hellebuyck on the bench for an extra attacker tied the game at 1-1.
The Manitoba Moose edged the Iowa Wild 3-2. Mason Shaw scored the go-ahead goal for the Moose with 4:45 left in the third period.
Aaron Cockerill fired rounds of 68-68-69-69 and finished tied for 13th at the DP World Tour’s Open de France. The Stony Mountain native is in 43rd spot in the Race to Dubai rankings.
