Wheatland County is doing its part to help keep residents safe from fires.
Mark Romaniuk, the deputy regional fire chief for Wheatland County Fire Services says 1,000 smoke detectors were purchased this year through donations from several fire safety organizations.
Residents of the county can come by the Administration Office to grab one.
The county has already handed out 100 smoke alarms to three fire halls in the area. Romaniuk says fire associations can also ask the county to grab a few for members of the public.
"If they so desire, they can take some and go around their fire districts as well."
It's Fire Prevention Month in October and according to Romaniuk, it's vital to check the batteries on smoke detectors once a year.
"Working smoke detectors do save people's lives."

Romaniuk says residents can install detectors high on a wall or ceiling so everyone at home can hear the alarms and ensure they are accessible for people who are hard of hearing and heavy sleepers.
The deputy fire chief mentioned there are about 600 alarms left at the Wheatland County office which will be kept out for residents to swing by and take one when they can.
"It's free to come by and we also have some other fire prevention stuff out at the table that people can take at their leisure," added Romaniuk.
Fire Prevention Month will run until October 31.
