The Portage Pitbulls U14 squad narrowly defeated their opponents, the Eastman Raiders, in Steinbach on the weekend, in their playoff quarter final.
Head Coach Luke Irwin says it was nice to get back at a team who gave them trouble in the regular season.
"It was a rematch of one of our games that we played already this season, where we had a tight game against them, and ended up coming on the wrong side of a victory, so we knew it was going to be a tough game going in. It was kind of back-and-forth all game. Final score was 66-62, I believe, so it came down to the wire."
With the quarter-final out of the way, the Pitbulls now take the trip to East Kildonan to take on the Falcons this weekend. Irwin notes that he's hoping to keep the boys focused on that game, and not the final, which will be played at Princess Auto Stadium.
"We're taking it one game at a time. We don't want to get thinking too far ahead of ourselves. Right now, we're just focused in on the Falcons and trying to do what we can to put ourselves in a good spot to compete or have a chance to win that game. We're just focused on trying to put our best team forward and put our guys in the best position to win."
The semi-final matchup will be Sunday morning at 11 a.m. in Winnipeg, and Irwin suggests that any fans willing to make the trip would be appreciated by the team.
