Steinbach Regional lost its Winnipeg High School Hockey League season opener 4-2 to the J.H. Bruns Broncos Wednesday afternoon at the T.G. Smith Arena. Dylan Wolfe and Ryan Reynolds scored for the Sabres who led 2-0 after the first period. The Bruins rallied with four unanswered goals including Kale Lussier's go-ahead marker with 2:11 left in the third period. SRSS netminder Trae Fast made 14 saves. The Sabres next game is Tuesday, October 22nd against the River East Kodiaks at the Gateway Arena in Winnipeg.
The Niverville Nighthawks dropped a 3-1 decision to the Portage Terriers at Stride Place. Aiden Corbett had the lone goal for the Nighthawks who have lost four of five games in October. Niverville has scored just seven goals this month.
The Brandon Wheat Kings opened their five-game homestand with a 6-3 victory over the WHL's Western Conference leading Spokane Chiefs at Westoba Place. Matteo Michels and Marcus Nguyen had two goals each for Brandon. Joby Baumuller and Nolan Flamand also scored for the Wheat Kings who led 3-0 after the first period. The Chiefs rallied with three unanswered second period goals to tie the game at 3-3. Michels potted the go-ahead goal with 60 seconds left in the middle frame. Flamand scored on the power play 27 seconds into the third period and Nguyen sealed the deal with a shorthanded marker with 6:09 left in regulation. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason made 22 saves. The Wheat Kings next game is Friday night against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair is headed to the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame. Sinclair retired from international soccer last year as the sport's leading goal scorer with 190 international goals. The 41-year-old Burnaby native announced last month that she will end her professional career after this season, her 11th with the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League.
Canada's Shaun Meachem along with vice-skip Kelly Schafer, second Chris Haichert and lead Teejay Haichert lead Group A with a 6-0 record and have qualified for the playoffs at the 2024 World Mixed Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland. Team Meachem will play their final round robin game today against Brett Sargon of New Zealand.
