It's the end of an era for local green thumbs.

After decades of being the go-to place for gardening needs, the Altona Greenhouse has closed its doors.

In a social media post confirming the news in September, the owners thanked all of the loyal customers, staff and fellow businesses over the years, noting they had an amazing time serving the community and surrounding area.

A statement submitted to PembinaValleyOnline from Altona Mayor, Harv Schroeder, thanked Keith Klippenstein and his family for their long-standing contributions to the community through their business, creating a lasting legacy throughout town by providing the many trees, plants and flowers that line the boulevards and make our neighbourhoods beautiful.

Today, the lot where the greenhouse stood for all of those years is a demolition zone as crews begin dismantling the various structures.

The Town of Altona confirmed in a news release that it has purchased the lot and expects to gain possession in December. While plans for the space aren't yet fully confirmed, officials say part of it will likely be incorporated into the neighbouring Public Works yard.
