The first snowfall of the season may be coming to Strathmore next week.

According to our weather forecast, Monday night is calling for temperatures to reach a low of -1°C along with periods of rain or snow.

However, Alysa Pederson, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says that it's unlikely snow will be heading to town.

"There will be snow in the province, but it depends on how significant the snow develops on the cold front that's going to be moving through on Monday night."

If snow does come to the area, it's expected to be through flurries and not heavy snowfall.

"Typically, in Calgary, Strathmore, and the area you can see snow at any time in the year," added Pederson. "It's possible to get snow much earlier than this."

Pederson also provided some statistics on previous first snowfalls. In 2023, the first snowfall was on October 23 with nine centimetres. The year before was similar, with snow falling for the first time on October 22.

"In 2018 and 2019 we had 30 centimetres on October 2," said Pederson. "We've had a couple of years of snow where we haven't seen it until the mid-end to October."

In 2014 there was snow recorded in early September, according to Pederson.
