The Garden Valley Zodiacs, Morden Thunder and Morris Mavericks were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Friday night. Rhett Peters scored the go-ahead goal with 2:49 left as GVC edged the Miller Aces 4-3. Caleb Pauls, Mark Schefer and Caleb Friesen also scored for the Zodiacs. Kaden Blair, Dawson Wiens and Gradyen Franz replied for the Aces. Sam Hildebrand recorded the shutout as the Thunder blanked Northlands Parkway 4-0. Logan Enns, Mason Frost, Mason Leite and Carter Dyck did the goal scoring for the defending champions. Nighthawks goaltender Hayden Janzen made 51 saves. Joel Clace scored twice in the Mavericks 5-3 victory over Portage Collegiate 5-3. Sheldon Lambert, Justin Lavack and Ty Laroche also scored for Morris. Kaleb Tanner, Jayden Dillabough and Denzel Hobson replied for the Trojans.
The Brandon Wheat Kings are 2-0 on their five-game homestand. Nolan Flamand had a goal and two assists to lead Brandon past the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 at Westoba Place. Caleb Hadland, Giorgos Pantelas and Marcus Nguyen also scored for the Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason made 37 saves.
The Winnipeg Jets are 4-0 to start the 2024-25 NHL season. Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti scored two goals each in the Jets 8-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks 8-3. Vladislav Namestnikov, Neal Pionk, Josh Morrissey and Kyle Connor had the other Winnipeg goals.
The Manitoba Moose lost 1-0 to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Moose goaltender Thomas Milic made 18 saves.
Canada’s Shaun Meachem lost his playoff opener at the 2024 World Mixed Curling Championship in Aberdeen, Scotland. Meachem along with vice-skip Kelly Schafer, second Chris Haichert and lead Teejay Haichert fell 6-4 to Simon Spits of the Netherlands.
