The 2024 Baseball Manitoba Awards Banquet was held Saturday night in Brandon. Ally Neufeld of Boissevain was named the 16U Female Player of the Year. Neufeld played for the 18U AA Brandon Knights and went to the Nationals with both the 16U Provincial team and the Provincial Senior team. Dale McKinnon of Deloraine was inducted into the Baseball Manitoba Honor Society. Red River Valley was selected the Region of the Year.
Peyton Shore stopped all 32 shots he faced and Maxx Hamelin had a goal and two assists in the Virden Oil Capitals 4-0 win over the Nighthawks in Niverville. Luke Robson, Tyler Dodgson and Bryce Bryant also scored for the Caps.
The Vincent Massey Vikings and Crocus Plainsmen were winners in the Westman High School Hockey League Saturday in Brandon. Josh Romanik had two goals and an assist as the defending champion Vikings defeated the Virden Golden Bears 6-1. Cale Calcut and Jaxon Deg scored two goals each and the Plainsmen beat Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn/Birdtail 5-3.
The Winnipeg Jets put their 4-0 record on the line Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Canada Life Centre. The hockey club will honour long-time centre Bryan Little prior to the game. Little, who has played since suffering a career ending ear injury on November 5th, 2019 in a game against New Jersey, signed a one-day contract in September to retire as a member of the Jets.
The Manitoba Moose lost 2-1 to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Tyson Empey had the lone goal for the Moose who play their home opener Saturday, October 26th against the Rockford IceHogs at Canada Life Centre.
