The Winkler Flyers six-game win streak came to an end Sunday night at the ICON Arena. Cole Sheffield made 33 saves as the Dauphin Kings defeated the defending Turnbull Cup champions 3-1. Blake Matheson got the Flyers on the board first as he scored his third of the season on the power play 16:04 into the opening period. Rylan Gage scored a shorthanded goal for the Kings just over a minute later to even the score at 1-1. Cayden Glover potted the go-ahead goal 17 seconds into the second period and Gavin Nemis put the visitors up by two with a power play goal 3:03 into the third. Winkler's Liam Ernst made 28 saves.
The Pembina Valley Twisters gave up four unanswered second period goals and lost 5-1 to the Charleswood Hawks at the Morris MultiPlex. Ketema Wall had the lone goal for the Twisters who were outshot 54-17 by the Hawks. Pembina Valley has lost six games in a row and are in the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League cellar with a record of 1-7-1.
The Pembina Valley Hawks dropped a 5-3 decision to the Brandon Wheat Kings. The defending Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champions did all their damage in the second as they scored five times including two on the power play in the final 2:25 of the period. Tyson Pethybridge, Nathan Froebe and Tegan Fehr scored third period goals for the Hawks.
The Winnipeg Jets are still perfect. Eric Comrie made 39 saves in his first start of the season as Winnipeg defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 at Canada Life Centre. Adam Lowry, Mason Appleton, Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Vladislav Namestnikov and Nino Niederreiter into an empty net did the goal scoring for the Jets (5-0-0) who are the only undefeated team in the National Hockey League.
Aaron Cockerill fired rounds of 71-69-71-71 and finished tied for 43rd place at the DP World Tour’s 2024 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters in Spain. The Stony Mountain native is in 46th spot in the Race to Dubai rankings. Julien Guerrier won the tournament as he beat Jorge Campillo in a nine-hole play-off.
