Officials with the Municipality of Rhineland hope they've rectified a problem-area along Road 8, just northwest of Altona.
A section of the road has been raised about one meter in an effort to keep a handful of homes from becoming isolated when levels on the nearby Buffalo Creek get high.

"The previous time that we had high water there, the residents there had to get a big tractor to get across that low area," explained Reeve Don Wiebe.
"So now, we have put down a bunch of shale and topped it with gravel so it's about two-and-a-half feet higher than it was. So, we think that should give them enough protection."
Wiebe noted, the Municipality has used shale in similar projects, and they felt comfortable using it in this scenario.
He is optimistic this improvement will ensure residents' access in and out of the area yards.
The Municipality budgeted $90,000 for the project. The total project cost has not yet been calculated but it is being offset thanks to a $52,000 grant through the province's Mitigation and Preparedness Program.
