Portage la Prairie is expected to experience a change in weather patterns for the remainder of the work week.
Christy Climenhaga, an Environment and Climate Change Canada scientist notes that Portage was well above seasonal temperatures on Monday. However, this warm spell will not last.
"Moving through the rest of the week, we expect a big pattern change, so temperatures are closer to that seasonal value. You know, 9, 10 or 11 degrees for daily highs for the next few days. It will feel a little more like fall."
Climenhaga reports that a cold front is expected to arrive in the southern prairies on Tuesday.
"That pattern change will drive our temperatures down, and we'll also see a little rainfall for the Portage area. So, the rain begins Tuesday morning. Also, some wind with that as that system rolls through, winds from the northwest, gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour. So, something to keep in mind for Tuesday. It's probably not the best day for a fall walk as we will be dealing with some wet and windy weather."
She mentions that the system will pass through town quickly before more favorable weather returns from Mother Nature.
"Tuesday, the rain starts early, you'll see maybe about five millimetres of rain. Then, it will be kind of a drizzly cloudy day. But then, by Wednesday morning, that sun should be back. It will be a relatively quiet forecast period for the rest of the week, other than that little system skirting through Tuesday. It should be short-lived, but it will bring in a little bit of wet weather. The best chance for some more rain at this point is looking into early next week. Otherwise, it's pretty quiet."
The question all trick-or-treaters want to know is, "Will there be snow for Halloween?" This is something Climenhaga has been tracking keenly.
"Early looks at temperatures for our Halloween day. It's been flip-flopping every single day. I've been kind of looking to get a good idea. Some days, it's looking cooler than normal. Some days, it's looking warmer. Some days, it's looking colder. Looking at the forecast today (Monday), Halloween looks warmer than normal again for the Portage area. So, I know lots of folks will be hoping for that. We'll have to wait until we're closer to the day to get a really good idea. We're still about ten days out, so it's not looking too bad at this point. I wouldn't pack away the warm layers for Halloween just yet."
