Habitat for Humanity volunteers and construction crews have been working hard all summer and into the fall season to use these beautiful days to their advantage to complete another new home.

The Habitat chapter in Virden started their most recent home build this past May and the special key ceremony with their new homeowners took place this past weekend.  This week the family is moving into their new home.

Habitat Manitoba Senior VP of Program Delivery, Steve Krahn, says he was very pleased to see how quickly the Virden chapter completed their 2024 build.

"They are a chapter that always has exceeded expectation on their timelines for completion of homes," shares Krahn, "and they did it with volunteer help, with lots of volunteers help. There were consistently four volunteers that were on the job site almost every day. Of course, we also use trades, but the volunteer assistance ensured that we got the home up quite quickly. Basically, a May to October turnaround time and the family got their keys on Saturday."

Krahn says the Brandon chapter completed two duplexes this summer, each containing two homes, on their Franklin and Percy Street build sites.

He says the Brandon projects have larger build teams that dedicate weeks at a time to volunteer their time to swing a hammer, raise walls and assist the professional trades people in their task.  They also have specialty groups like women's build for days and weeks during the summer.

Habitat Manitoba is currently accepting applications for a new homeowner for the Killarney Habitat build project that will begin in spring of 2025.

"We are currently in the process of doing family selection and would encourage any applications from the community as far as interested families in purchasing a Habitat home in the Killarney town," shares Krahn.

"And we also welcome any additional people that would like to sit on chapter committees," he adds.
