And even though the special weather statement for Airdrie and the surrounding areas has ended, road conditions after Monday's snow dump may be challenging.

The QEII towards Calgary city limits is partly covered with snow, with icy wheel paths and slippery sections. Similar conditions are observed on the QEII north of Airdrie. Roads in Calgary, including main arterial routes such as Deerfoot, are in good condition, though slush is reported. Motorists should also be aware that road crews are clearing snow.

Further north, closer to Carstairs, Highway 2A is icy with black ice patches. Yesterday, Alberta Mounties reminded drivers that winter driving conditions will become increasingly frequent as we enter winter. Hence, drivers are being reminded to take extra precautions on the roads.

For those who must travel, here are some key tips for staying safe:

  • Clear all snow from your vehicle to improve visibility.
  • Allow extra travel time in poor weather.
  • Ensure your headlights are functioning and always on.
  • Increase following and braking distance on icy roads.
  • Travel with a fully charged phone for emergencies.
  • Slow down and adjust your speed to the conditions. Driving too fast in poor weather can result in fines.

The RCMP also recommends keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle, including items like a thermal blanket, extra clothing, a candle with waterproof matches, a first aid kit, booster cables, and a shovel.
