Marvin Francis Germain
September 15, 1960 – October 14, 2024
The sudden and unexpected death of Marvin Francis Germain, 64 years, of Humboldt, SK, occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024. Marvin was born on September 15, 1960 in Humboldt, SK, to Leo and Eleanor (nee Schimnosky) Germain. He grew up in Humboldt, attending St. Augustine School and Humboldt Collegiate Institute. During his teen years, he along with his sister Denise and other friends, worked at R & J Food Mart. Marvin began working at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Humboldt in the housekeeping department. Over the years, he obtained his 4th Class Steam Engineer ticket. He also obtained his Microsoft certification. His career at the hospital continued until his passing, with his most recent title of Building Systems and Maintenance Supervisor. He was well respected in his leadership role as being a fair boss, who’s own work ethic demonstrated to his staff what was expected of them. Marvin was very dedicated, atleast 44 years, to his job and enjoyed his role there. He was president of the Social Club at the hospital for eight years and was an active member during his 44 years of service. He enjoyed the times spent with co-workers at non-work events. Marvin was a very committed volunteer to many organizations but especially the Humboldt Broncos, working at over 1000 games over a 37-year span and volunteering as an off-ice official at the RBC Cup, which he enjoyed immensely. He enjoyed all sports, but loved hockey and golf. Marvin had a great sense of humour, sharing jokes with family and friends alike.
On August 21, 1993, Marvin married Barbara Jean Fitch and they were blessed with one daughter, Rachel. He was the best dad, always attending and being part of all the activities that Rachel participated in. He earned himself the title of “Dance Dad of the Year” from some of the moms and almost got a t-shirt with that inscription. He learned to do “dance hair and makeup” but drew the line at the eyes, to which he left to Barb and eventually to Rachel. The two of them shared a very special bond. He would attend not one, but all three dance performances on a weekend, noting “what else would I be doing if Rachel was dancing?” He would attend all her activities, whether softball, gymnastics, skating, school sports, or anything else.
Marvin’s favourite season since a young child was the Christmas season. He enjoyed Christmas lights, especially the Enchanted Forest in Saskatoon with Barb and Rachel. He liked to decorate the tree, all the festive activities, participating in making and decorating sugar cookies with Rachel, and helping Barb prepare and stuff the turkey for Christmas dinner. Marvin also loved antique cars shows, attending events with his family, and riding his motorcycle. Marvin always wanted to give Barb a quarter to buy herself a sense of humour, even a week prior to his death of which Barb did not want to give him the benefit of the doubt and actually laugh.
Even though Marvin would empty his pockets before going in the washer, somehow there ended up being dimes stuck in the washing machine, and ironically a dime was found after washing his clothes at the funeral home. A life well lived, my good and faithful servant, who departed this earthly life, long before his time. You will be sadly and greatly missed. Hopefully there is lots of lemon meringue pie and funeral cake (peanut butter marshmallow squares) in Heaven. We love you always and forever, fluffy.
Marvin will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Barbara Germain; daughter Rachel Germain; siblings: Lorna Germain (George Janes), Gerard (Charlene) Germain, and Denise Germain; mother-in-law Lorraine Fitch; in-laws of the Fitch family: Heather (Trent Bobinski) Fitch and Eric (Cindy) Fitch; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Marvin was predeceased by his parents Leo and Eleanor Germain; siblings: Barry (Daphane) Germain, Mark Germain and Marianne Thistle; and father-in-law Lee Fitch.
A Prayer Service for Marvin was held on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., led by Bev Trach. The Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Colin Roy. Both Services were held at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt. Interment followed at the Humboldt Public Cemetery. Memorial donations in Marvin’s memory may be made to Rachel’s Education & Endeavors Fund (cheques payable to Barb and/or Rachel Germain).
