Moose Jaw City Council will weigh its options when it comes to installing security cameras on traffic infrastructure once a new council is elected.
During a recent city council meeting, Coun. Dawn Luhning put forward the following motion:
“That administration prepare a report for city council in the upcoming budget in potential partnership with the Moose Jaw Police Service to install cameras on some of the city’s traffic and roadway infrastructure around the downtown core.”
Luhning said she first came up with the idea after seeing a post online from a local business owner who had damage done to their property downtown. A comment on the post asked the business owner why they don’t put up cameras.
Luhning also looked into the fact that a lot of residential houses now have their own security cameras to catch porch pirates and those causing mischief.
“I thought residential homes are doing it to keep an eye on any mischief that is going on and I thought maybe that is something that the city could look at doing,” Luhning said.
She acknowledged that a project like this would be complicated because downtown is such a wide area. She said the idea behind the motion is to simply see a report about what the city could possibly do to have cameras installed on some of the city’s facilities or some of the traffic infrastructure in downtown Moose Jaw.
Ultimately, the discussion and decision will be up to the newly-elected council after the municipal election on Nov. 13.
Luhning’s motion passed by a vote of 6-1, with Coun. Kim Robinson opposed.
