The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings are hosting a special hockey game Friday night (Oct. 25) in Strathmore.
The Kings have partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society to raise funds and generate awareness for the organization.
"Friday night is Hockey Fights Cancer night at the Family Centre. What that means is we have a couple of different activations for fans to kind of get involved and promote the cause on social media," says Cody Holdaway general manager for the club.
Last year, the Kings were able to raise $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society and they hope to meet that goal again.
The team will donate a portion of the ticket and 50/50 sales to the society and set up a jar for any extra donations people want to give.
Holdaway says he got the inspiration to help the society while coming back from a Kings last year.
"It's kind of a funny story we were on the bus last year coming home from Coaldale. It's about 7 p.m. and I get a call from the Canadian Cancer Society. They're like, 'Hey, we're just wondering if you wanted to partner with us.' It was a no-brainer when they offered us to be a part of the Hockey Fights Cancer program."
The players will be showing their support during the game by having colorful tape and laces.
"The Canadian Cancer Society is sending us the official NHL helmet stickers. The players will be rocking purple tape during the game on Friday. We've just outfitted the team in pink laces. It's just all in support of a good cause," explained Holdaway.
The game starts Friday at 8 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre Arena and fans will get a purple card to write a message of encouragement in support of people battling cancer.
The bout will pause for everyone to hold the purple cards up and snap a quick photo of everyone in attendance.
