Altona residents are being encouraged to continue their composting habits as Council works through potential changes with the current pick up service provider.
The Town's contract with Green Opportunities is set to end on January 31st, but Mayor Harv Schroeder is assuring the community that Council is actively seeking viable alternatives in order to guarantee the ongoing service.
Additionally, officials say they do not anticipate any interruptions to compost collection for residents in the foreseeable future.
As a result, residents are being encouraged to continue to composting habits they've developed in recent years.
"We strongly emphasize that we continue to compost as usual," stressed Schroeder. "Continue to use your green bins for kitchen waste and drop off yard waste, such as lawn clippings and branches, at the Altona/Rhineland disposal site."
In a news release, the Town underscored its commitment the continued effectiveness of its composting efforts and upholding its strategic priority of good environmental stewardship.
"A good environmental stewardship strategic priority equals making good, sustainable decisions because taking care of our environment is contributing to taking care of our future," said Schroeder, adding the Town continues to aim to reduce its environmental impact. "One of the ways we do that is through offering a convenient and efficient compost collection service to our community. And if we can compost, that means we aren't putting that (waste) into the landfill."
Further updates will be provided as the Town works towards formalizing a long-term agreement with a composting service provider.
