Kindersley native Gracie Georgete laced up her first skates at age three and started playing hockey at five, a love for the sport that has only grown over the years. Now, she’s making waves in the Saskatchewan Women’s Junior Hockey League (SJWHL) with the Western Prairie Junior Klippers, a team she joined in its inaugural season last year.

Georgete shared her thoughts on the team’s early progress and her excitement about the season. “We’ve had a strong start so far,” Gracie said. “It’s been great to see, and I think we’ll only get better as we keep going.”

The Klippers are preparing for a home game against the Saskatoon Blaze, one of the league’s top teams, and Gracie is thrilled to play in front of a hometown crowd. “It’s always a nice feeling to get in front of your own fans. There’s nothing like playing at home and seeing everyone you know in the stands.”

Facing the Blaze will be a test for the young team, but Georgete remains confident. “We’ve had a good practice this week, and we’re going in with a positive mindset, ready to play our game,” she said. “We’ll give it our all, and that’s all we can do.”

With the SJWHL just entering its second season, the league’s expansion marks a promising future for women’s hockey in Saskatchewan, something Gracie is excited about. “It’s amazing to see more opportunities for us girls. Now younger players have something to look up to and a league to strive for.”

Catch Gracie and the Western Prairie Junior Clippers this Sunday, October 27, as they take on the Saskatoon Blaze at the West Central Event Centre at 2:00 PM.
