A local farm has an initiative to save waste on old pumpkins after Halloween.
On November 1, Christina Stender from Eh Farms will have a vehicle parked outside of the 104.5 More Country station as she collects pumpkins to feed her red Mangalitsa pigs.
"The pigs go crazy for pumpkins," said Stender. "It's very healthy for them, and it's an extra snack for them in the day."
The vehicle will be set up between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with Stender asking that residents remove toothpicks, candles, and paint from the pumpkins.
"Usually, we get a full pickup load. Maybe about 100 pumpkins, and we have just over 90 pigs, so everybody gets a snack," added Stender.
Stender's red Mangalitsa pigs originate from Hungary and are the only known species of domestic pigs with a wooly coat. She was the first farmer in Canada to import the animals.
The pumpkins for pigs initiative has been going on for several years in Strathmore.
Anyone who isn't able to drop off their pumpkins can take them to Eh Farms after the event.
