The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Trojans football team faced a heartbreaking playoff loss against the Fort Frances Muskies on Thursday, October 24, ending their playoffs earlier than they hoped. Head Coach Brendon Brydges shared his thoughts on the game and the journey the team undertook this year.

"It was tough, especially since we had nine Grade 12 players, some of whom have been with the team since my first-year coaching."

Brydges emphasized the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the team throughout the season.

"We practiced consistently, with high attendance even during those colder days. This year, we had a remarkable commitment level, with only a few practices having under 30 players."

While playoff nerves undoubtedly played a role in the game on Thursday, Brydges also attributed injuries as a significant factor.

"We faced some critical injuries to key players, particularly in our receiving positions. These setbacks challenged our depth and impacted our performance on the field."

Despite the disappointment of the loss and the season coming to an end, Brydges expressed pride in his players, particularly the five young women on the team. He noted their courage in participating in a predominantly male sport and encouraged their continued involvement in football beyond high school.

"There are numerous opportunities for them to continue playing, whether at junior levels or in local leagues."

Looking ahead, Brydges is optimistic about the future of the program. He highlighted the potential for growth and development, particularly among younger players who now have the chance to learn from this experience.

"I want the younger players on the team to see the effort put in by the Grade 12s and use it as motivation to improve."

To celebrate the season, the team is planning a banquet on November 18, to recognize players’ achievements, including various awards for dedication and sportsmanship.

"This night is about celebrating the hard work of all our players, regardless of the season's outcome."

As the PCI Trojans reflect on their season and look toward future opportunities, Coach Brydge's commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team environment remains a driving force. The team's spirit and resilience will undoubtedly serve them well in the seasons to come and for the Grade 12s moving onto their future endeavors. Coach Brydges hopes they carry the same mentality they had in football through whatever life puts in front of them.
