Steinbach Regional lost 72-0 to the defending champion Dakota Lancers Friday night in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s ANAVETS Bowl quarterfinal at Princess Auto Stadium. The Lancers, who led 49-0 at halftime, are the second ranked high school football team in the country. The Sabres finished the season with five wins and three losses and finished top eight in the province.
Ryan McDonald scored twice, Luke Bogart had three assists and Zack Burleigh stopped 24 shots in recording the shutout as the Steinbach Pistons blanked the Neepawa Titans 6-0 at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Carson White, Jackson Kostiuk, Brett Kaiser and Connor Paronuzzi also scored for the Pistons who meet the Oil Capitals in Virden tonight. Adam Vigfusson scored his second goal of the night with 34 seconds left in regulation and Dawson Zeller potted the shootout winner as the Niverville Nighthawks shaded the Winnipeg Freeze 6-5.
The Steinbach Huskies, Ste. Anne Aces, Landmark Blues and Springfield Xtreme were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League. Seth Bergman scored the tying goal at 15:26 of the third period and then potted the go-ahead goal with 21 seconds left in regulation to lift the defending champion Huskies past the Mitchell Mustangs 5-4. Jack Seniuk made 28 saves as the Aces edged the Red River Mudbugs 2-1. Kieran Reimer had a hat trick and Jackson Reimer chipped in with four helpers as the Blues downed the Grunthal Red Wings 7-1. Dylan Kizlik mad 24 saves as the Xtreme defeated the Macdonald Swarm 4-1.
The St. Malo Warriors scored four unanswered third period goals en route to a 6-2 victory over the Selkirk Fishermen. Logan Fillion and Teagan Fillion had two goals each for the defending Capital Region Junior Hockey League champions while singles went to Ashton Cure and Keston Worley.
The South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League’s 73rd season got underway Friday night in Carman. Marcus Sekundiak scored four times as the Beavers downed the Morden Bombers 6-3. Mikol Sartor and Brett Piper also scored for Carman. Derek Wiebe, Carter Hynes and Tyler Peers replied for the Bombers.
The Brandon Wheat Kings lost 4-3 in overtime to the Saskatoon Blades. Ben Riche potted the winner 1:37 into the extra period. Jaxon Jacobson scored twice in regulation for the Wheat Kings. Dylan Ronald had the other Brandon goal.
The Winnipeg Jets wrap up their three-game road trip tonight when they meet the Flames in Calgary. The Jets are on a franchise record seven-game win streak to start the NHL’s 2024-25 season.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their regular season finale today at 2 p.m. against the Alouettes in Montreal. The Bombers (10-7) will clinch first place and a bye to the West Division final with a win or tie. The defending Grey Cup champions have already clinched top spot in the East.
