A 46-year-old man had been arrested after breaking into a dorm at the University of Manitoba and assaulting a female student.

The incident happened around 4:45 a.m. on Friday in a housing complex at the University of Manitoba on Dafoe Rd.

When police arrived, they were met by a woman who reported that while in her suite an intruder entered her room and physically assaulted her. She managed to fight off the suspect calling for help. University Security Services was alerted and police were contacted. The female was treated for injuries and is in stable condition.

At around 11 p.m., officers were called to an establishment along the south strip of Pembina Hwy after a citizen noticed a man who matched the suspect’s description.

Police located and arrested the man in the 1800 block of Pembina Hwy. He was then turned over to the Sex Crimes Unit.

Investigators determined, the accused entered the student building on Dafoe Road and broke into a secured area and then the victim’s room.

A 46-year-old male is facing a long list of charges including, break enter & commit - dwelling house, break & enter with intent - dwelling house x 3, sexual assault, robbery and overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another person.

He remains in custody.
