On Sunday, October 27th, the Salem Foundation hosted its annual Faspa Fellowship & Song event, bringing together community members for an afternoon filled with fellowship, music, and tradition. The event continues to be a highly anticipated gathering, with attendees embracing Salem Home’s long-standing Mennonite roots in fellowship and song.
"There's such a strong tradition here of fostering community through shared meals and music," Salem Home CEO Karin Oliveira said. "It’s something that not only our residents cherish, but it’s also become a beloved part of the wider community.”
Celebrating music together
This year, the Baker Hutterite Choir was invited to perform, a decision made to honor local talent while mixing up the annual lineup. "We've had them before, and they were fantastic," noted Oliveira. "Each year, we aim to showcase a range of musical styles, from choirs to smaller duets, so that there’s something for everyone."
Salem Home’s connections with local Hutterite communities go beyond performances. Many Hutterite colonies actively support Salem Home and other local services in the Mennonite community, underscoring the unique spirit of collaboration and mutual support that defines these groups.
Faspa tradition and a new Salem park
With seating for over 340 guests, the event was well-attended, offering a traditional faspa spread that encouraged fellowship around shared tables. Attendees also learned about Salem Home’s latest project, Salem Park. This outdoor space is set to provide residents, families, and friends with a scenic, accessible area to enjoy nature and reflect. Planned for the south side of the building, Salem Park will feature a new walkway, benches, flower beds, and a memory tree area for families to honor past residents.
"Our vision for Salem Park is that it will be a welcoming place not only for our residents but also for their families and the greater community. With no fence around the campus, we’re excited to see this space become a part of everyday life here,” Karin shared.
Fundraising success
The annual event typically raises between $20,000 to $25,000, with all proceeds supporting projects like Salem Park and other initiatives that directly benefit residents. This year's event brought in $22,000 that will directly support Salem Park.
Salem Foundation’s Faspa Fellowship & Song event continues to be a celebration of heritage, community, and forward-thinking projects that enrich the lives of residents and families alike.
