The U18 AAA Weyburn Gold Wings took to the road on the weekend, heading to Swift Current for a pair of games against the Wildcats. The Gold Wings would come home from the trip with three points, after winning one game in a shootout and losing the second in overtime.
In the game Saturday night, the two teams would trade the lead throughout the 60 minutes of regulation play. Weyburn would get things started 5:25 into the game when Julia Durr scored her second of the season on the power play, with Peyton Halayka and Hallie Parada getting the assists.
Swift Current replied before the period was over, though, when Jade Thompson got the puck past Amy Swayze with 8:25 to play in the frame.
Weyburn regained the lead with the lone goal of the second period. Kadence Dansereau netted her fourth of the year 5:37 into the period, assisted by Madelyn Sittler and Kiah Shields.
Swift Current replied late in the third period when Kara Bergen scored with 5:38 remaining. Then, with 1:55 remaining, the Wildcats took the lead when Reece Hawkins scored.
The Gold Wings would throw everything they could at the Wildcats in the final moments, and it would pay off. With eight seconds left on the clock, Parada scored, assisted by Halayka and Durr, to make it a 3-3 game, and force overtime.
In the extra periods, as they played a 4-on-4 overtime and then a 3-on-3 overtime, neither team was able to score, meaning it went to a shootout. In the shootout, Halayka and Parada were successful, while Swayze allowed just one goal, giving the Gold Wings the win.
Sunday afternoon, the two teams played again, and this time, things were a lot tighter despite Swift Current outshooting Weyburn 46 to 15.
In the first period, Jade Thompson would score with 12 seconds left to play, beating Tila Boyd to make it 1-0. From there, Boyd would stand on her head, stopping 31 of the 32 shots she faced across the second and third periods, as well as overtime.
Weyburn would tie the game up early in the third period when Parada scored her second of the season 23 seconds into the frame. Macie Groenewegen and Halayka had the assists.
In overtime, neither team could score in the first period. In the second overtime period, when playing 3-on-3, Dior Stringer would get the puck past Boyd to give the Wildcats the win.
The Gold Wings will now have a break from league play, not returning to action until November 13th, when they travel to Wilcox to take on the Notre Dame Hounds.
