Winnipeg, Manitoba, siblings Nathan and Heather Porteous with family roots to Portage la Prairie are set to make waves in the home renovation world with their new HGTV series, "Hoarder House Flippers," premiering on October 30 at 8 p.m. Central Time. The duo, who have been flipping homes for seven years, flipped a house in Portage in 2022.
The idea for the show stemmed from a playful social media post made by Heather who jokingly used the hashtag #HGTVNoticeMe on their Instagram page, initially intended for friends and family to track their projects. Little did they know, this lighthearted tag caught the attention of TV producers, leading to an unexpected opportunity to create a series.
In one of the episodes, they flip a home in our city, which they acquired from relatives who had encountered unexpected challenges with the property, including a hoarding situation.
"We love a challenge," Nathan remarked, highlighting their enthusiasm for tackling complex renovations.
The siblings pride themselves on their design aesthetic, which they describe as 'farmhouse chic' for this particular project. Heather emphasized the importance of designing for the local market, stating that they aim for styles that resonate with buyers here.
"It just feels right for the area," she explained.
The creative process for renovations usually begins within minutes of entering a new property. Nathan and Heather share a unique bond, often playfully bickering and bantering over design choices. Their collaborative approach has resulted in a variety of successful projects that blend both of their tastes. Nathan leans towards tech-forward designs while Heather focuses on broader appeal.
Family support plays a crucial role in their renovations. In this particular flip, they leaned on their relatives in the Portage to help. Both siblings benefit from a network of relatives who assist with various aspects of their projects, from landscaping to plumbing. This camaraderie not only helps reduce costs but also fosters a community spirit around their work.
As excitement builds for the show's premiere, Nathan and Heather are hopeful for a third season, driven by their love for the craft and the joy of working together.
"We're just really excited for everyone to see what we've created," Heather shared.
Fans of designs and house flipping can look forward to eight episodes this season, with Nathan and Heather bringing their unique blend of humour and creativity to each project. The series will be available to stream on StackTV, and viewers can anticipate plenty of banter and inspiring design ideas throughout the season.
