The Prairie Sky Trail Association brings a pair of seminars designed to empower youth and women in terms of personal protection and self-defense.
The first is a Bullyproof seminar being offered at the Prairie Sky Collective Athletic Center on Sunday November 17th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The event is billed as a life changing seminar teaching children how to defuse confrontations with words and never to initiate physical aggression.
“The Bullyproof seminar is part of our Psych Up program which is sponsored by BHP,” says Whitney Shussel with Prairie Sky Collective. “It’s a two-hour self-defense seminar for kids aged 5 –12. We have instructors from Okami Martial Arts in Saskatoon.”
Shussel says the program will teach techniques that are primarily non-physical in nature designed to deflect threats and keep confrontations to a non-physical level. When that doesn’t prove possible, Shussel says the seminar will also demonstrate self-defense techniques.
Following the youth seminar comes a two-day learning experience for women on November 30 and December 1. The Women Empowered super-seminar is open to women aged 12 years plus. Participants aged 15 years and under will require adult accompaniment. Crystal Greenwood of Okami Martial Arts will be providing the training.
This is a very comprehensive self-defense seminar,” Shussel explains. “They do weekly classes in Saskatoon, but they wrap up their eight-week program into the two-day seminar so that people in rural Saskatchewan, like in Humboldt, are able to attend it and not have to drive to the city weekly for classes.”
The programming is developed with a trauma informed lens and a platform of real-life experiences as shared by instructors. The instruction focuses on the most common threat scenarios that women face.
The one-day Kids Bullyproof Seminar costs $10. Registration for two-day Women Empowered Seminar is $50. To register or for more information, email whitney@prairieskytrails.ca.
