Habitat for Humanity Winkler-Morden celebrated the completion of the new house this past Saturday, officially handing over the keys to Binwa and Ruth.
The family, along with their three children — Sifa, Esther, and Elisha — are excited to start moving and making the house feel like a home.
How it started
Their journey to homeownership began with the groundbreaking ceremony earlier this year, in May, where local community members and leaders gathered to support the project. Over the months, a veritable outpouring of volunteer work transformed the site, with skilled tradespeople and citizens coming together to help construct the house.
Binwa shared his excitement during the key ceremony, “I feel very excited to see that I can get the key today and start moving right away... to have my own house is one of my goals in life.”

Community leaders
Local leaders Winkler Mayor Henry Siemens and MLA of Morden-Winkler Carrie Hiebert spoke on the community support the build received, with Hiebert remarking, “As a part of the province... I just really see such an amazing pocket of community here that we have. It’s such a real, rare thing to see what we do here to take care of families.”
Siemens added, “It seems like yesterday we were here turning sod for this project. The speed with which this was built is absolutely amazing. To have a community come together like this to make the impossible possible, that’s how we grow a community.”
What comes next
As the family prepares to settle in, Habitat for Humanity is looking ahead to future projects, with Manager of Chapter Support for Habitat Manitoba Christina Falk sharing, “We are starting [fundraising] today. We would love to build every year like we’ve been able to do. It gets harder as build costs go up, but we can build as much as we can raise money for.”
