Moose Jaw has been selected as the location for the 2024 Saskatchewan Karate Association’s Fall Provincial Tournament, with the city represented by members of the Five Hills Karate Club.

It all gets underway on November 9 and will see over 100 martial artists from across the province gather at the Saskatchewan PolyTechnic Gymnasium, competing for provincial acclaim – and in the case of black belt athletes, a spot on the national team.

The day kicks off with the black belt competition at 9 a.m. and spectators are welcome and can watch the tournament free of charge.

While the tournament is the headline event, Nancy Rosnes, Co-Founder of the Five Hills Karate Club, extends an invitation to anyone who is interested in joining the club.

“We accept all ages, from age five up to 105. Anybody can participate in karate. It’s for all ages... Anybody can come out and join at any time, you don’t have to be there at the beginning of the season.”

The Five Hills Karate Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the upper gymnasium at Minto United Church.

Although the club is hosting a tournament, they are welcoming participants of all skill levels, with Rosnes noting that there isn’t a requirement to compete.

“We just build on your skills every class, and we tailor the classes to the individual. You're not competing against everybody else. You are learning and developing and growing your skills and techniques at your level. We work according to what your needs are.”

Those who are interested in trying their hand at karate can contact Nancy or Colin via text at (306) 630-5892 or through email at fivehillskarateclub@gmail.com
