Winnipeggers looking for ways to give their pumpkins a second lease on life are encouraged to stop by CF Polo Park this weekend.

This Saturday Compost Winnipeg will host their annual Pumpkin drop, allowing Winnipeggers to turn their rotting pumpkins into compost.

"Of the 80,000 tonnes of pumpkins produced in Canada, 66% are sold to consumers; often used for carving and are never eaten," said Compost Winnipeg in a post on Instagram. "Without intervention, this is an immense amount of organic waste destined for the landfill!"

Participants in the event will have the opportunity to drop their pumpkins from the second level of the parkade into a collection truck that will be set up below.

Last year, 4,901 pumpkins were collected, with 1,676 coming from the event at CF Polo Park.  Of those, 3,722 went to the Prairie Green Landfill to be composted and 369 were donated to the Litte Red Barn Sanctuary.

Over 21,271 kg of organics have been diverted since the Pumpkin Drop started in 2022.

The fourth Annual Pumpkin Drop will take place Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at CF Polo Park.
