As residents gear up for Halloween, some might dress up their furry friends for the occasion.
Staff with the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore provided a few safety tips to keep pets safe when people are out trick or treating.
Tips include:
- Make sure pets are comfortable if they're being put into a costume. This means nothing that restricts movement or breathing.
- Keep candy bowls out of reach as chocolate and other treats can be deadly to pets.
- Don't use decorations that could be dangerous. Keep candles, wires, and small decorations away from curious cats and dogs.
- Set up a quiet area for pets who might get anxious when trick or treaters are at the door.
- Check ID tags and microchips just in case they get out of the house.
- Keep an eye on pets when the door opens.
- If residents plan to bring pets trick or treating, ensure they are on a leash and use a lighted collar or reflective strips so people can see them.
