Halloween is here, and Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt wants every little goblin, kitty-cat, and superhero to enjoy a night of safe fun.
Hunt shared his memories of trick-or-treating as a kid – from cool costumes to unforgettable nights out, "It was fun." Now, as a police chief patrolling the streets with his team on Halloween, he’s all about helping kids have the most fun possible while staying safe.
Tips for lighting up the night
As kids prepare their spooky-ooky costumes, Hunt has a bright idea: add something shiny. “Costumes are better seen with a bit of reflective tape,” he said, “and parents, pack a flashlight or clip-on glow lights!” Not only does it make every costume sparkle, but it helps drivers see kids as they go from door to door.

Mask on or mask off? Choosing costumes with clear vision
While masks are part of the Halloween fun, Hunt has some wise words: “If you’re wearing a mask, make sure you can still see all around you!” He suggests that kids can still enjoy a mask, but with caution. Clear vision means safety when planning which house to run to next.
Heads up, drivers
For all the drivers out there, Halloween is the night to drive slowly and keep an eye out for little creatures on the move. “Kids are planning their next candy stop, and they’re on a mission,” Hunt said. The message is clear: slow down and keep your eyes open.
A sweeter, safer Halloween for all
Reflecting on Halloween past, Hunt expressed that the spooky season has grown more family-friendly over the years in the City of Winkler. Mischief has given way to family fun. But, Hunt still reminds parents to give any candy a quick check before kids dig in – a simple way to keep the night as sweet as it is safe.
Chief Hunt’s favourite part of Halloween
"I remember going out with my dad and he dressed up with stilts and a mask and a long coat", he laughed. "And that that sticks up my memory, you know, a fun evening."
When asked what his favourite thing about Halloween was, Hunt smiled. “Seeing all the kids in costumes. Our officers will be out on patrol, and it's always fun to see everybody out and about and having fun."
