Keeping communities clean and healthy isn’t just a business for John Magee—it’s a mission rooted in his deep connection to Southwest Saskatchewan. Born and raised in a small town in the Southwest, John attended Gull Lake School and went on to play football with the Regina Thunder before entering the oilfield industry. However, his roots in Gull Lake and a family background in farming drew him back home to raise his family and start his own business.
Initially focused on oilfield waste management through his company Dynamic Disposal, John soon noticed a demand for better waste services right in Gull Lake. In 2008, recognizing a need for reliable and affordable waste disposal, he launched Advanced Waste Solutions and began offering farmyard and business bin pickups. When curbside pickups were just starting to catch on, he saw an opportunity to expand, signing AWS’s first curbside contracts with the villages of Climax and Frontier. “Climax and Frontier were our first curbside customers in 2008, and they’re still with us today,” he adds proudly.
"We started with just 12 bins," recalls Joanne Zanidean, manager of AWS. "Since then, we've grown to manage over 600 bins across multiple communities." Today, AWS serves not only Gull Lake but also Shaunavon, Hazlet, Tompkins, Swift Current, and the villages of Climax and Frontier. The company prides itself on its customer-centric approach, emphasizing transparency in pricing, clear communication, and a commitment to knowing its customers by name.
"We're accountable to our customers," says Zanidean. "Good customer service is a big thing for us."
Beyond its core services, AWS is dedicated to giving back to the communities it serves. The company actively supports local events and charities, providing free garbage pickup for a variety of community initiatives, such as the Tompkins slow-pitch tournament, rink cleanups, and rummage sales.
"John [Magee] likes to invest back into the community and see it grow," she said. "He believes in supporting the hardworking people of Southwest Saskatchewan."
AWS is committed to offering flexible waste removal solutions tailored to its customers' unique needs. The company’s on-call tipping program provides farmers with the ability to request pickups at their convenience, ensuring that waste management fits into their schedules. “Not a lot of companies do on-call tipping,” Zanidean explains. “When your bin is full, you call us, and we come out.”
Additionally, AWS can handle pickups of any size, offering same-day quick turnaround service, and ensuring that clients receive timely support.
Whether you're a homeowner, a business owner, or a farmer, AWS offers a comprehensive suite of waste management solutions designed to meet your specific requirements. Their commitment to customer service, community engagement, and environmental stewardship makes them a true leader in waste management in Southwest Saskatchewan.
