Francine Cunningham is a Strathmore-based author who was recently featured in a new Indigenous horror anthology book.
Cunningham has been a professional writer for over 10 years, winning awards for her short fiction and children's stories.
Her work has been included in Zegaajimo: Indigenous Horror Fiction, which is set to be released on November 9.
"My story is about a young hunter who goes out to live in the bush," said Cunningham. "She's been trained in how to conduct a proper hunt, and she does not follow any of those, and she must live with the consequences of her actions."
Cunningham said she was approached by the book's publishers to submit one of her countless short stories for the anthology.
The local author also attended school with the editor, Nathan Niigan Noodin Adler, as they both achieved their master's at the University of British Columbia.
"He's edited me in a couple of different anthologies. He's really great," added Cunningham.
As for what comes next for her, she is working on her new short story collection, which she hopes to finish writing by Christmas.
When she's not writing, Cunningham is making art and working as an educator.
"When you go to publish a short story, it's always nice to have a few short stories out there in the world."
Zegaajimo: Indigenous Horror Fiction will be available online, through local bookstores, and available to borrow from the Strathmore Municipal Library.
