Darrell Janz, a longtime and well-respected Newscaster passed away at the age of 83 over the weekend.
Janz was fondly remembered by many as the face and voice of News on CTV Calgary and many in the industry were taught by him.
The news juggernaut also never officially retired as he was most recently seen on YES TV.
He taught journalism for over 25 years between SAIT and Mount Royal College, now University.
Janz got his start at our founding radio station 950 CFAM in Altona, Manitoba.
CEO of Golden West Radio, Elmer Hildebrand knew Janz since 1962 when he landed his first News job in Altona.
Golden West Radio was only formed five years prior to that in 1957.
When contacted about the sad news of his passing Hildebrand shared his thoughts on his long friendship with the legendary broadcaster.
"Darrel and I both grew up in small Mennonite communities and I was privileged to get to know him when he joined CFAM in 1962! Not only did he have a great voice…he also had that special curiosity that made him a great Reporter.
His small-town rural roots never left him, and he grew in the Radio and TV Industry but never lost his empathy and humility.
As has already reported he was recognized by organizations for his work both in the Broadcast Industry but also for his public service with many community charitable entities. Even though he spent most of his Broadcast career in Television he did return to Radio doing some news reporting for CHRB (AM 1140), our Golden West station in High River.
Darrel always looked for the positive in people…and he was really liked by all who had the opportunity to interact with him."
While his family has not mentioned the cause of his death, they extended thanks to the Foothills Hospital, singling out the Tom Baker Centre.
Family member Shannon Lee Rae made a posting on LinkedIn on Saturday morning.
“It is with a heavy heart that we his family announce that our father and Calgary broadcasting legend Darrel Janz, went to be with his Saviour this morning at the age of 83.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff of the Foothills Hospital, especially the Tom Baker Centre,” it read.
