A drawn-out incident that started with a hit-and-run Saturday in Altona, ended up with 65-year-old local man getting arrested for impaired driving.
It all began shortly after lunch when it was reported that a van blew through a stop sign at the intersection of 2nd St. NE and 7th Ave. NE, crashing into another stop sign, knocking it down and then fleeing the scene.
While searching for the suspect, officers stopped to speak to a few dirt bikers parked at a local gas station. However, the bikers fled, cutting across roadways, failing to stop at stop signs and cutting off several vehicles, according to police.
It was when they were following the dirt bikers at a distance that officers found the van in the hit-and-run incident in a ditch north of town. Inside, they found the driver in the Driver's Seat and arrested him.
Police continue to investigate the dirt bike incident as well. They were last seen going through fields north of Altona.
