The Town of Okotoks has proclaimed that the third week of November will officially be recognized as "Métis Week" in Okotoks every year.
Métis Week this year will be from November 10 to 16, which also includes Louis Riel Day on November 16, and this week will acknowledge and celebrate the Métis people, their culture, history, and achievements.
On Sunday, November 10, the Métis Nation flag will be raised at the Okotoks Municipal Centre, which will mark the beginning of Métis Week in Canada.
On top of that, the lights at the Municipal Centre building will be illuminated blue for Métis Week.
There won't be an official flag raising ceremony for the public, but the town will be offering two Listen and Learn sessions on November 12 that will teach about the Métis people and their culture.
As part of these sessions, there will be a Métis blessing from Métis Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who will also speak about their culture.
There will also be opening remarks by the District Captain of the Rocky View Métis District for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, Amber Boyd.
The sessions are free for anyone who wishes to drop in, and there will be some refreshments provided.
The first session will begin at 1 p.m., while the second session will start at 2:30 p.m.
