Looking south along the newly raised 9th Street NW on the far west side of Altona

Altona's Public Works department has been hard at work getting ready for winter. The warm and relatively dry Fall has allowed for a significant amount of work to get done before the first flakes fly.

"They’re completing the final street sweeping, cleaning storm drains, and ensuring snow-clearing equipment is ready to go," explained Mayor Harv Schroeder. "A couple of recent projects you may have noticed are a layer of gravel has been added to the new section of the cemetery, and road raising work has been done on 9th Street NW to reduce flooding risks."

Schroeder noted the area around 9th Street NW is particularly prone to flooding, so the Town is aiming to continue with more long-term flood mitigation work next year.

And we all know, at some point, snowfall will arrive. With that in mind, the Mayor had a reminder about street parking and snow clearing operations in Altona.

"When snow does arrive, please remember parked cars need to be off the streets until snow clearing is complete," he explained. "Parking on the street during these times makes proper snow clearing difficult, and it can result in a parking ticket, so please keep this in mind as winter approaches."

Schroeder made the comments for the latest episode of In the Mayor's Chair, which you can listen to below.
