If you were wanting to help out with Remembrance Day setup at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Sunday, there’s been a slight change of plans.
“Usually there’s a hockey game on the evening before – the 10th of November – and this year there isn’t one,” explained Christine Simpson, first vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #59.
“They’ve changed the program so that we can go into the arena at 7:30 p.m. instead of 10 p.m. to set up for Remembrance Day.”
Those able to volunteer starting at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 10 can call Simpson at 306-681-3835 to express their interest.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the south side of the Moose Jaw Events Centre, off 2nd Avenue. People should wear warm clothing, gloves, and shoes with some grip to avoid slipping on the ice.
Setup involves putting the flooring over the ice surface, setting up the cenotaph and chairs, and putting wreaths on stands in preparation for Monday’s ceremony.
Simpson said that after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, they’re also looking for volunteers to help tear down and take away the cenotaph, as well as take out the flooring over the ice.
The Remembrance Day ceremony will take place starting at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, with attendees asked to be seated by 10:30 a.m.
