A weather system moving across the prairies has triggered snowfall warnings for parts of southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan. While the Weyburn area was initially expected to experience a mix of rain and snow, the forecast has been updated to predict a transition from rain to snow as the day progresses.
Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor confirmed that areas west of Weyburn and Estevan will likely see more snowfall. However, Weyburn can still expect to see upwards of 4 centimetres of snow accumulate by late Wednesday morning.
"We're going to be flirting with temperatures right about 2 to 3 degrees," Proctor stated, "so we might see a little bit of mixed rain and snow on Tuesday night in the Weyburn-Estevan area."
The system is also tracking south, with a greater impact expected in the Dakotas.
This snowfall will be the first of the season, and despite the mild temperatures expected by the weekend, Proctor warned that it won't be the last.
"If we start looking at the longer range forecast, La Nina is really developing out in the Pacific at this point in time," Proctor explained, "so we're definitely trending towards more seasonal temperatures as we move into later November and into December."
He added that the recent mild weather may have created a false sense of security, but a return to more typical conditions is expected as November progresses.
The system is also expected to bring windy conditions with temperatures steadily dropping throughout Wednesday. You can stay up to date with the latest forecast by visiting the Discover Weyburn Weather page.
