While much of the heavy lifting has been done at the new SPCA just south of its current location, there is still work to be done. Some of that work and a launch on new projects will be discussed at the Humboldt and District SPCA Annual General Meeting coming up on Friday, November 15 at the Bella Vista Inn.
Not only will the AGM undertake a review of the past year, but it will serve as a strategic map for many of the projects local pet owners are looking forward to, says Joanne Koski, spokesperson for the SPCA.
“As you know, it has been quite a year, and we’ve had a lot of action going on. We are getting very close to the completion of the renovation (at the new property). We are a bit stuck on getting the walls filled in where the big overhead doors were, but we’re slowly poking away at that.”
The call continues for volunteers to get in touch with the SPCA and arrange for a time to help out with the various reno projects, including the creation of the isolation kennels for the dogs. Those with a general knowledge of construction would be welcomed.
“Otherwise, things are looking ready to go,” Koski adds. “We will need to do a big painting bee. The floors and the kennel walls for the dogs need to have a special epoxy coat put on, so that will need to happen before we can say we are officially ready to move in.”
The AGM is open to the public, especially as a show of support of what has been done, and the direction in terms of service and support the group is heading with the new facilities and land. It will hopefully lead to a couple of long anticipated projects.
“The next phase with the new location will be to develop a dog park in collaboration with the city, and the other part is to have a boarding facility. There seems to be a huge call for it in our city. We have a building that will need to be retrofitted, and then we’ll be able to offer that service.”
Koski says there is space for new board members as well.
“We are currently operating with a small board of six members, and we would love to have ten members at least. There is certainly room for anybody who has a love for animals and for anybody who wants to see us move ahead.”
It’s a working, hands on board, Koski says, that undertakes the management and the progress of the facility, it’s development and its operations.
The public is invited to the AGM on Friday, November 15 at 7:00 pm
