One person is dead following a series of collisions involving 19 vehicles Wednesday morning along Highway 59.
At 6:30 am, Selkirk RCMP responded to the crash on the bridge just south of Springhill Winter Sports Park, in the Rural Municipality of East St. Paul.
Police say the initial investigation has determined that a southbound vehicle lost control on the bridge, resulting in a chain reaction of collisions that involved 19 vehicles. When officers arrived on scene, they immediately began rerouting vehicles to avoid further collisions at the site.
Officers from Red River North RCMP detachment, along with other emergency responders including nearby fire departments and ambulances were all on scene to assist motorists with a variety of minor injuries.
However, a 55-year-old male from Tyndall, was found dead on scene.
Police say it is believed that icy road conditions were a factor in the crashes.
Selkirk RCMP are asking anyone who was travelling along Highway 59 between the hours of 6:30 and 7:00 am, who may have dashcam footage, to contact the detachment at 204-482-1222.
Selkirk RCMP along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist continue to investigate.
