Morden Legion prepares to honour veterans on Remembrance Day

Leading up to Remembrance Day, the Morden Legion has been preparing a series of events to honour veterans and emphasize the importance of remembering those who served.

Ceremony and banquet details

The Morden Remembrance Day ceremony will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Access Event Center. In addition to the ceremony, the Legion will host a Remembrance Day banquet on Sunday, featuring cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and supper at 6:30 p.m. This long-standing tradition allows the community, veterans, and Legion members to gather and reflect.

Reflecting on sacrifice

“The Remembrance Day ceremony is a time for the community to come together and acknowledge the sacrifices made by veterans,” Frost explained. “Given the increasing global conflicts, there may come a time when we’ll need to make new sacrifices. Remembering our past veterans and the challenges they faced is essential.”

Involving the next generation

Frost also emphasized the importance of involving younger generations, noting the efforts by the Western School Division to engage students through Remembrance Day ceremonies in schools. “Seeing kids participate each year is amazing, and the enthusiasm from teachers and staff grows each year,” said Frost. “Their support is crucial in promoting the remembrance of veterans and their sacrifices.”

Honouring local veterans with street banners

To further honour local veterans, the Morden Legion has recently installed veteran banners on Stephen Street and North Railway, with support from the city. These banners, along with street signs renamed in tribute to veterans, have received positive feedback from the public. “It’s heartening to see the city’s unwavering support for these initiatives,” said Frost, adding that past mayors and city councils have always been receptive to the Legion’s ideas.

The importance of wearing poppies

Frost also highlighted the importance of wearing poppies as a visible tribute to veterans. Poppies are available for purchase at various local businesses, with proceeds supporting veterans and programs such as service dogs for those with PTSD. The funds raised go into the Legion’s Poppy Fund, which is strictly used to support veterans and related services.

Winkler's Remembrance Day event

In addition to the Morden ceremony, a Remembrance Day event will also be held in Winkler at the P.W. Enns Centennial Concert Hall. The Winkler Veterans Association, led by Rob Wiebe, organizes this event, which has grown over the years thanks to community support and the dedicated efforts of volunteers.

Learning from the past

“Remembrance Day is a time to learn from the past,” Frost emphasized. “By understanding history, we can work toward a future with fewer conflicts.”
