Have an unwanted hunting rifle sitting around the house? How about a pair of antlers or maybe some old fishing gear?
The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will gladly take them off your hands as part of their Guns for Habitat and Antlers for Habitat programs.
The program allows people to donate unwanted unrestricted firearms, antlers and outdoor equipment. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation will then auction the items off with the proceeds going to purchase key wildlife habitat in Saskatchewan.
Over the past 20 years, the program has raised over $300,000 to preserve wildlife habitat.
“We own nearly 80,000 acres of land in the province of Saskatchewan. That money is used for us to turn around and keep buying land with it. We shoot every year to buy more wildlife habitat,” said Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Director of Habitat Lands Darren Newberry.
The donors will receive in exchange a tax-deductible receipt for the amount that the donation sells for.
For those concerned about the transfer for firearms, Newberry said the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is more than happy to help out.
“If they have some firearms that they would like to donate, just give us a call and then we can arrange to have someone come right to their house to pick them up and we can deal with them from there,” he explained.
Those who wish to drop off a donation in-person can do so at the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation office to 9 Lancaster Road here in Moose Jaw.
